Each year bikers from around the world gather at Elvington Airfield in the UK for a display of bikes, skill and outrageous speeds. Riders will risk everything down a long windy runway which is incidentally the same one Richard Hammond from Top Gear had a mishap on in a drag car.
The aim being to stay on the back wheel for a full 1 kilometre and your speed is taken as you go through the timing lights at the end. There are spotters for the duration of each run to ensure it is clean and there is often heartache when the front wheel touches down just before the finish line.
The 2021 event was interrupted by torrential rainfall on the Saturday and a rush of activity on the Sunday with the even won for the 2nd time by Damo Hurst achieving 191.146mph.
The event also included riders aiming for top speeds in the standing start 1km and 2km categories, with Holeshot Racing’s Jarod Jack Frost achieving a staggering 269.759mph into a headwind.
The event is the mastermind of David “Dodge” Rogers and is overseen by Straightliners.
